ALMA - The Northumberland Regional High School varsity boys soccer tournament wrapped up on Saturday with the host Nighthawks taking the title with a decisive 3-1 victory over Hants East in the final.
This is the Nighthawks second tournament victory since winning the East Hants Invitational in early September.
The Nighthawks played a solid defensive match and a great offensive output was led by striker Nico Klein with two goals and Mario Lee with one. Nico Klein led all tournament scoring with seven goals.
In the previous meeting with Hants East earlier in the day the Nighthawks fell 2-1 in a very tight match that could have easily went either way. Scoring for the Nighthawks in the game was Esteban Siqueff. Other tournament scores for Saturday were: Pugwash 5-0 over Hants East#1; Hants East#2 2-1 over Northumberland High; North Nova 5-2 over Hants East #1 and Hants East#2 8-0 over Pictou Academy.
The Nighthawks team continues to get better as the season progresses. They are a very young team made up of eight Grade 10 players, five Grade 11s and six Grade 12s including Canada Games goalkeeper Kent Watters.
Now the team is gearing up for regionals, which will begin in the second week of October. They will be involved in a three-team regional tournament with CEC and Antigonish with the winner capturing the regional banner and the runner-up moving on to a qualifier. The Nighthawks results to date are one tie and one loss against Antigonish and two ties against CEC.
Head coach Darren Ferdinand said he is very impressed with the discipline and work ethic his team has showed so far.
"The guys have really come together as a team and are playing great," he said.
This is actually Ferdinand's first year coaching the team since he recently transferred from Parrsboro and he said he is absolutely loving it.
He said it was great to see the guys win over the weekend.
"They worked hard and they deserved it," he said.
