After a week off with the flu, the Weeks Jr. A Crushers were back in both body and spirit last night as they downed the Summerside Western Capitals 4-1 at home.
"We've had some guys out sick, so once we got our feet under us in the first period it was good," said Crushers captain Geoff Hum.
The Crushers dominated throughout the game, blasting Summerside's goalie Paul Dorsey with 59 shots on net compared with 30 shots against the Crushers Alex Newman.
Both teams were short players.
"They were missing their top line basically," Crushers head coach Troy Dumville said of Summerside. "It's no different than us. We've been battling that all year with injuries."
Summerside did bench a strong team in spite of it though, he said.
"They have good depth," Dumville said. "Take their top players out of the lineup and they're still a pretty good team on the ice."
The Crushers called up three Midget players to fill the holes in their roster. They were Garret Holmes, Corey Bennett and Brent Turnbull from the Weeks Major Midgets, who formed "the kid line."
Hum said the trio deserve a lot of credit. It's intimidating to play against players who are both older and bigger than you, but they handled themselves well, he said.
"They definitely did us a big favour by coming in," he said.
Dumville had high praise for 15-year-old Brent Turnbull.
"When a 15-year-old comes out and has the most hits for the game tonight, that sends a message - and he's got skills to boot," Dumville said. "I'm not a super scout by any means, but I think it's safe to say he's got a long future in hockey."
All three were fun to watch though, he said.
"You always hope that they'll be future Crushers, but some of them may move on to other things as well," he said.
Turnbull said he hopes to get more opportunities like this in the future.
"It's a lot faster," he said.
Scoring for the Crushers were Adam Sloanwhite in the first, Michael Hynes in the second, Matthieu Boudreau and Dan Joyce scored in the third.
Trevor Carmichael scored Summerside's only goal of the game 15 seconds into the third.
Tonight as the Crushers take on the Yarmouth Mariners, Dumville said he is optimistic for another victory.
"We just need to keep going and closing the gap in the division," he said. "We feel that we're one of the top teams in the division and we've got to keep playing that way."
