Almost a week after their first loss of the season at the hand of Cumberland, the Pictou County Scotians are ready to start a new winning streak.
"Our guys were pretty hard on themselves after the loss," said head coach George Frazee. "They really came back to practice with an objective to get the train back on the tracks again and start winning again."
But winning again won't be easy. They're going to be playing the St. Margaret's Bay Ducks which Frazee said is a fast, high scoring team that is on a winning streak of their own right now.
"Our defence is going to have to be very solid this weekend," Frazee said.
This is the first time the Scotians will have played the Ducks.
Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at home at the Trenton arena the familiarity level will be much higher as they host the Antigonish Bulldogs.
"There is a lot of emotion (for us) between them and Cumberland," Frazee said. "They're our two rival teams."
Scotians forward Kirk Harris said he is particularly looking forward to Sunday's game.
"We've got two of our top players from last year playing for Antigonish this year so it should be interesting to play against them," he said. "I'm roommates with them too."
Playing for Antigonish are Jimmy MacInnis, who was the Scotians top scorer last year and Kody Cuvelier who was their No. 1 goalie.
"It'll be a return match," Frazee said. "We played them once this year and beat them, so they're going to be up for this game."
With a 9-1 record, the Scotians have nothing to be embarrassed about this season.
"We had a tough one last week but I think that might bring us back down to earth again and let us know we're not unbeatable," Harris said. "Hopefully we can keep these wins rolling."
Harris said the players have been working together to make the wins.
"I think it's just been an overall team effort every night," Harris said. "It hasn't been one person standing out. Every game someone just steps up and gets a big goal."
This is Harris' third year with the team and he said they are blessed to have a great coaching staff.
"George is a great motivator. He knows how to get us going. He's just a good speaker," Harris said. "He knows how to keep everybody calm and on point and that makes a big difference having someone behind the bench who knows what they're doing."
The coach has stressed consistent hard work and keeping things on an even keel.
"If we get down a couple goals we don't panic," he said. "We always manage to find a way to win somehow."
Defenceman Fraser Roddick said believes that will happen if they continue to work together like they have.
"We're starting to get together as a team," he said. "We had our first loss of the season the other day. It was a disappointing loss, but it's going to come. I think that'll bring us back down to earth, but that makes us work harder."
He firmly believes his team has what it takes to win their division championship.
"My money's on us," he said.
