WESTVILLE - The Lockview Dragons devoured their opponents to win the 4th annual Danny Dorrington Memorial Tournament over the weekend in Westville.
The Fall River team defeated the Barrington Barons 2-0 to take home the gold.
The Dorrington tournament is held annually by Northumberland Regional High School in memory of local player and coach Danny Dorrington.
"He did a lot of coaching forever and ever, and was big in getting kids into hockey," said Northumberland coach Jim White. "He was kind of an all-around good guy. If you needed something, he'd give you a hand. If you needed a team looked after, he'd do it."
While the Nighthawks did not do as well as he would have liked, White said they gained some valuable experience and had a fun time.
"I think it's excellent," he said. "They get to see some teams that they don't usually get to see and they get to see some teams that are a little bit higher up on the totem pole than us too."
Playing against top teams from around the province gives them somewhere to set their sights.
"It's nice to see them and see what we have to get through," White said.
Overall the tournament was a success, he said.
"We had nothing but good responses from different teams that were here," he said. "Everybody said the hospitality was great and the hockey itself was quite good, so we can't complain at all."
He said next year they are hoping to make the tournament even bigger and better.
This is Aaron Sample's third year playing for Northumberland in the tournament. As captain this year he took part in the puck drop at the opening ceremonies.
Prior to this year, he said he did not know much about Dorrington but made the time to find out this year.
"I kind of read up a little bit and saw how involved he was," Sample said.
For him there is no better place to play a tournament than in your home rink.
"There's a better atmosphere," he said. "Everybody's in a lot better mood."
The Nighthawks are in a rebuilding year so with on three Grade 12 students on the team, so Sample wasn't taking the losses too much to heart because he knows the team is learning. He was happy to have the experience though and to see others there.
"A lot of people say it's their favourite tournament of the year," he said. "Not just the local teams, but from other counties."
