NEW GLASGOW - Special Olympics Pictou County will send a contingent of 56 coaches, staff and athletes to this weekend's Special Olympics Nova Scotia games in Halifax.
Pictou County will be represented in the sports of swimming, track and field, powerlifting and Bowling, says co-ordinator Cathy Mason.
"We will have two track and field athletes competing for the first time as well as three swimming athletes competing for their first time."
There is an influx of younger athletes in Special Olympics Pictou County, and some of them have the opportunity to compete not only on a regional level, but on the provincial level for the first time.
"It is exciting to see the growth in numbers of our athletes our swim program has tripled in size, growing from five swimmers three years ago to 15 athletes in total now."
This edition of the summer games will see the Pictou County team enter two powerlifters under the guidance of coach Ross MacIntosh. "Ross has worked with these two athletes for the last three years and they are both now ready for competition," Mason said.
Track coach Kelly Atwater said the athletes are very serious about the competition, but still enjoy it.
"They want to win - they are competitive," she said, as the athletes worked out in Parkdale on Wednesday. "But they also have a lot of fun."
Athletes from 15 regions across Nova Scotia will attend the games, to be held at St. Mary's and Dalhousie universities.
