NEW GLASGOW - Heidi Feit got into Judo because her cousin told her she should. She was six at the time.
About a day after she started he quit, but nine years later she's still going strong.
"I just stayed in it because I love it," she says. "It was real easy."
Now 15, Feit is a brown belt and already gaining attention as a worldclass athlete in the sport.
At the Ontario Open International Judo Tournament in Kingston, Ont., Feit took home gold in her division.
The win earns her the right to travel to Germany as part of the Canadian team in March, 2010. But she was already accepted for that since she achieved the same selection to Europe by winning the gold medal at the 2009 Quebec Open Championships.
While significant, the victories are not a unique accomplishment for her.
"I already went to Germany last year and it was so cool," Feit said.
She's looking forward to travelling some more for competitions.
"I get to go to Europe and then there's also a few tournaments in the States that we're going to go to," she said.
"I like going places and I like training with different people from around the world," she says. "You get to meet friends and stuff."
Then too, flipping people is kind of fun.
"I just like being aggressive," Feit said.
Feit trains at the Kanokai Judo Club in New Glasgow two days a week and when she has the chance travels to Halifax to work with her coach there.
All the meets, training and travel is helping to give her experience for her ultimate goal.
"I want to go to the Olympics," she said. "I'm going to train for a while. My first goal is to place at the Canada Winter Games and see where that takes me."
And if her plate weren't already full enough, she's just starting high school and is playing basketball and rugby as well.
"It's really busy," she says.
But when you've got goals to achieve it takes a little work.
"I hope to get my black belt soon," she says.
No feat to big for Feit
