VANCOUVER - As many as 7.1 million Canadians tuned in to watch Alexandre Bilodeau collect his gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics on Monday night, says CTV.
Canada's host broadcasting consortium says the TV audience for Bilodeau's medal presentation after winning the Olympic moguls final averaged 6.3 million viewers. CTV says the audience peaked at 7.1 million during the playing of the national anthem.
Of that total, about 1.4 million francophones watched the presentation to Bilodeau, a Quebecer who won Canada's first Olympic gold medal on home soll.
CTV also says three million watched Mike Robertson, a 24-year-old from Canmore, Alta., win a silver medal in men's snowboard cross.
Meanwhile, the men's downhill race won by Switzerland's Didier Defago drew 3.3 million.
The Olympics are being broadcast by CTV, Canada's largest private broadcaster, and Rogers Media, a unit of cable TV, cellphone and media giant Rogers Communications Inc.
