County MLAs happy to talk about expenditures

Wednesday, the provincial government released a detailed list of expenses claimed by Nova Scotia MLAs from July 2006-June 2009.

NEW GLASGOW - The furor over MLA expenditures reached a fever pitch Wednesday afternoon, following the provincial government's decision to fully open expense account information to the public.
The order to do so came from Premier Darrell Dexter and it was Pictou West MLA and House Speaker Charlie Parker who distributed the information. All of it comes from a report by Auditor General Jacques Lapointe last week.
It's a big list, and it includes expenses for individual MLAs between July 2006 and June 2009. Most of the items listed are office equipment and there are a considerable amount of computer and gadget purchases.
Parker said full disclosure is a step in making the system more accountable.
"We're trying to find a balance between what MLAs require in order to serve their constituents well, and what's reasonable and just," he said. "I've released every bit of information that the auditor general gave me. Our job now is to try to fix the system and ensure that these types of things don't happen again."
Between constituency receipts and electronic technology, Parker claimed $7,004.65 in the time period mentioned above.
More costly than the model display of the Ship Hector, the one that was flagged as an 'excessive expenditure' in the auditor's report, were computer purchases.
The two most expensive items were a laptop and an office computer.
"In my office I have (a computer) and Hugh Miller, who works with me, has one. And then, we have one laptop between us. So if I'm on the road we can keep up with what's going on - or vice-versa.
"MLAs need technological items, like printers or photocopiers or a camera to do their work. Unfortunately, right now, the rules are not clear and there's no upper end limit for MLAs to spend on these items."
Parker said the direction to analyse and come up with new expense rules falls to former Progressive Conservative speaker, Art Donahoe, who was appointed in December to the province's internal economy board. Donahoe is expected to give his report in July.
"We feel he's a well-qualified individual who can set these guidelines, whether it's how many computers should be purchased in a year or in a three-year period and what should be the maximum amount to be paid," Parker said.
The News attempted to reach former Pictou Centre MLA Pat Dunn last night but no one was available to take the call.
Among the most expensive items on Dunn's list are a 50" Sony television, purchased with a stand and a warranty. There's also a $2,779.28 bill which includes a soundbar for a flat panel display ($39.99), a 22" LCD monitor ($269.00) and a laptop.
Dunn's tab shows another laptop, valued at $2,143.82.
Pictou East MLA Clarrie MacKinnon says he found out yesterday afternoon he was on a list of 28 MLAs showing duplicate payments. For him, it was a May 2008 charge for an apartment rental.
MacKinnon says the payment for the apartment was listed in error.
"I have asked the Speaker's Office to go through my account," he said.
As for items on his expense account, MacKinnon said all of the purchases made, including a July 2006 purchase of two computers totalling $4,061.64, was needed for constituency work.
"We're still using them," MacKinnon said of the computers.
Also listed are six chairs - they're shown as 'monogram armchairs.' MacKinnon said he's not certain what the monogram listing is for.
"We couldn't believe that when the list was circulated this afternoon - those chairs are straight Dobson's (Office Pro) chairs," he said. "There's absolutely nothing on them. There's no Pictou East, CFMK or anything else."
MacKinnon said last night he was happy to discuss any item on his expense account. "Any time that any purchase has been made in our office. I thought that what I was buying was needed."
He calls the information disclosed yesterday, "the best thing that could have ever happened to the system."
But at the same time, he added "It's not a time to be proud of being an MLA, no matter where you sit in the current expenditure situation - if you are a person with a conscience, you're losing sleep over this.
"The last thing I want to be remembered for in Pictou County is an MLA who ripped off the system. That's the very last thing," MacKinnon said. "I want them to say that he was an MLA who was out there with people and doing things right."

We have to ask ourselves where these items are now? Did Mr. Dunns TV and computers get passed on to the new guy in his position or are they in his living room or den at home! If they were passed on then great. If not, then shame on him.
I will continue watching my 27 TV and paying my student loans for which I couldn't get government assistance for!!!

I love how all the Arm Chair Quarterbacks scream how this is such a travesty and that Criminal investigations should occur. Thing is the culture of consumerism in Western Societies spurs this on.
Think about it if you could get financing for a 50 inch Sony would you say no ? People in Western Consumer Societies are spoiled themselves hardly actually producing goods while we are in debt up to our eye balls continuing to buy the next toy made in Asia.
Pat Dunn was a school teacher basically and why indeed would he have to sacrifice the lifestyle he has on a Teachers Salary , Pension and Perks like Storm Days to then serve the people of Nova Scotia as an MLA? Gosh A Welfare Mother once told me that she could not survive without CABLE TV and SMOKES. Why should the politician who made over 100,000 dollars a year as a school adiministrator have to go without when his salary is reduced to 60 k a year

I wish our schools could obtain computers as easily as our MLA.

I just purchased a laptop from Dell, total cost less than $1400.00 taxes in and it was one of their higher end. I could have spent more money but it would be a laptop used mostly for gaming, and of course I was spending my own money not someone elses. Perhaps this is what our politicians are purchasing, gaming laptops they are certainly playing lots of games.

I have no issues with the purchases of the electronics, however the $790 boat for an office desk is a bit excessive

Why are they buying computer equipment anyway? Like Michelin, they should lease this equipment and when they are done with it give it back.

Ok, so I am a little confused. What happens to these purchases when the MLA is voted out of office or quits? Wouldn't it have to be returned to the government or be used by the incoming MLA?

Ok, we aren't idiots. We can't expect mla's to get thier own laptops, phones, desks, etc for offices...but what is disheartening are Generators, TV's lavish camera's, and so much more. They get to keep the stuff they purchase, so you tell me, 50inch TV? really? Hey Pat, nice TV where'd you get that? Oh that's a perk of being an MLA, you the tax payer paid for that, and I get to keep it... I guess we the tax payer can knock on his door anytime and watch the hockey game. Just seems a bit much for me... I wouldn't be able to sleep at night for spending money on non necessities.

I'd also be very interested to know what ANY MLA needs a tv for in their office, let along a 50 one. The NS government is contemplating raising taxes because of our severe deficit and our voted in MLA's are buying electronics???

And four or five new computers each? High end ones at that. I'd have to try pretty hard to spend $2000 on a laptop. I wonder if these items are even in their offices, or if their kids have brand new computers, and a fancy new tv in the living room.

I can't imagine how these folks sleep at night, knowing their stealing from the citizens who elected them.

There should be serious consequences for these actions. These MLA's are essentially stealing from Nova Scotians. In the private sector this would result in an immediate dismissal from a compay.

I really would like to know why they need so many coputers every year? I opperate a small business and have been using the same coputer for 4 years. I have upgraded in the last few but never spent $3000. I think criminal charges should be laid, if we defrauded the government we definatly would be paying the money back and most likely do time for it. But hey Mr Dexter there is no money for wage increases because it would cut down ob how much crap politicians can buy. GIVE ME A BREAK

The current Pictou County MLAs sure don't have big screen televisions!

Clarrie holds community office days every week -- he and his staffers take their laptops and work from firehalls and community centers to be accessable to his constituents. I don't begrudge him the laptops!!!

On that note, have you ever been to Clarrie's office? The chairs sure aren't monogrammed , it's just the basics.

Charlie,Clarrie and Ross work hard for the people of Pictou County!

Look at the facts people, we can be proud of our representatives here in our corner of the province!

I agree with alot of these comments, I am shocked that these three local MLA's have done this. I would like to see them fired, they should not get away with this, it is stealing! I would like to know how they sleep at night when some of our seniors cannot afford their medicine, people have such little money to pay for heat that they have to choose between food, heat, or shelter. They have to pay for what they have done!!!!!

You could justify an electronic expense such as a laptop or desktop computer but a model boat for the office? Come on. Any personal touches he wants to make to his own office should not come at the expense of the tax payers.

Being someone who works for a large business I don't see any of these claims out of the norm. Having a large screen TV is your office are great for video conversances as you can see multiple people in different location on the screen at once. Most of the laptop and PC prices seem reasonable if they are planing on running large reports or databases which require alot of RAM and CPU speed. Office Furniture... people need to sit and store files. I see nothing on this list that is unreasonable

Jane Doe you clear have no idea what these computers are being used for ... they are not just checking emails.

Its apparent that the majority of posters here have no concept of what it takes to run a large business much less govt. Yes, there have been balant excesses for many years, may I remind you who would have set up these guidelines in the first place? Conservative and Liberals governements. Now the NDP is going to finally address this issue and make some long overdue changes. Time to move forward, especially since many of these are legitimate expenses. I swear you people want gov't run on Wal-Mart issue computers, camers and furniture..now that is quite the image to portray to other businesses, provinces etc. You are already poorly viewed by many in the rest of the country, why embellish that image?
