The Tri-County Vanguard has been nominated for general excellence in its circulation category and has been nominated in the special section category for its annual Lobster Outlook edition, while editor Tina Comeau has received nominations in four individual categories: outstanding feature story for her tale of a bus tour retracing the 1967 Shag Harbour incident, outstanding news story for Call Me Seth: Yarmouth County transgender teen's story, outstanding resources story for Lobster season opener: When mom is watching from the wharf and as outstanding local columnist. Former Tri-County Vanguard reporter Jonathan Riley was also nominated in the outstanding resources category for Tracking turtles: on the trial of an endangered species.
The Valley Journal-Advertiser staff was the third nominee in the outstanding resources category for its work during last summer’s drought. The series of stories last July included features on concerns by farmers about the impact the lack of rain would have on crops and orchards in Kings and West Hants, predictions from a meteorologist on the summer forecast, and memories of past droughts.
Wendy Elliott has been nominated for outstanding feature photo for last year’s Apple Blossom Festival coronation, while Jennifer Vardy Little has been nominated for outstanding sports photo for a picture taken during a football game between Central Kings and Northeast Kings.
Larry Powell with the Annapolis Valley Register has been nominated in the outstanding online innovation for his coverage of a warehouse fire in Middleton on Nov. 20, 2016. Powell did two Facebook Live videos from the scene – one was shared 697 times in less than two hours and had more than 29,440 views, while the second had 458 shares and 22,930 views, bringing in comments from viewers across North America – along with a story and photos for the AnnapolisCountySpectator.ca website. The story was later followed up with further web updates and repackaged for our print publication the following day.
Cartoonist Jason Freeman of Waterville has also been nominated in the outstanding cartoon category.
The winners will be announced June 3 in Halifax.
