PICTOU – Rising fuel costs and convenience shopping may soon make the “no milk” signs still placed in some Pictou County windows a thing of the past.
Kevin Campbell, vice-president of corporate services for Scotsburn Dairy, said the dairy is still offering home delivery of its milk to about 120 customers in the area’s five towns, but all of the service is being assisted.
He said service in the Town of Pictou will be ending in the near future while the other four towns are being assessed on an individual basis.
“There are a mixture of reasons. There are stores open 24 hours, seven days a week for shopping and both adults are usually out of the house now so there is no one home,” he said, adding rising cost of fuel also affects the service.
About 10 years ago, close to 6,000 Pictou County residents were signed up for milk in delivery, he said. About five years ago, the dairy stopped delivering its milk to rural areas.
He said the delivery takes place every Wednesday by one driver. He said if the service is ended completely, the driver would still be employed with the company. Its commercial delivery service will continue as usual.
