Calendar initiative raises $1,000 for two Brier Island lighthouses

Second printing of calendar to be discussed at group’s upcoming meeting

BRIER ISLAND, NS – A calendar fundraising initiative has so far raised over $1,000 for lighthouse restoration projects on and around Brier Island.

The money was raised through summer sales of the calendar created by the Save an Island Lighthouse 2, or SAIL2, group.

Group members, including Amy Tudor, are feeling excited about future fundraising after this initial success, and will meet early November to decide on a second printing.

“The support reaffirms these lighthouses matter, and are part of our island’s history,” said Tudor.

Upkeep a long, expensive process

Fundraising began after the government declared Peter’s Island Lighthouse and Brier Island Light and Alarm as surplus, meaning the community is now responsible for their upkeep.

Lighthouses are expensive, and often in need of repairs, something many have become more aware of since the declaration. Repair costs for both structures are estimated at $80,000, a huge sum for a small island.

It’s a daunting amount, but the group had to start somewhere, said Tudor.

“It’s a lot of money. We’re looking to raise awareness with these calendars so maybe more lighthouse lovers come on board,” said Tudor.

An initiative with reach

And raise awareness they have.

Calendars have been shipped as far as British Columbia and the United States.

Tudor credits social media sharing platforms with helping spread the word on a larger scale.

“Our community is a supportive one, but we are small. When your goal is tens of thousands of dollars, the extended support becomes vital,” said Tudor.

The calendars, printed by Rick Foote at Digby Print & Promo, are 18-months and 12 pages, and feature photos of lighthouses on and around Brier Island, taken by Tudor and other contributors Neil Green, Penny Graham and Chris Mills.

All proceeds go directly to the upkeep of both Peter’s Island Lighthouse and Brier Island Light and Alarm.

She hopes the group will continue to receive the support it has thus far.

“Images of the area lighthouse are hanging coast to coast and even internationally …and show people are willing to support us,” said Tudor.
