Two of Pictou County's highland dancers were nominated to attend the Scot Dance Teachers Alliance North America Scholarship Program.

The James L. McKenzie and Elspeth Strathern Scholarships will be held in Vancouver from Oct 5 to 8. The girls received word in the spring that they were selected to attend this invitation only event.

Ainslie Salter, 14, is the daughter of Krista and Dave Wilson and Sandy Salter of Stellarton. She is a student of the Brenda MacKay School of Dance. Rachel Rowan, 13, is the daughter of Dave and Laura Rowan of Durham. Rachel is a student from the Holly MacDonald-Bent School of Dance.

The girls were chosen based on the marks they received in their theory exams taken in the fall of 2016 and were nominated by examiner Janice Macquarrie of Antigonish. They completed their grade two theory and are nominated for the junior scholarship. Both girls were nominated to attend last year as well.

There are four sections in which the candidates must compete – a Tribute to J.L. McKenzie, a solo choreography, a written paper and a master class. An overall winner will be chosen based on the most points scored and trophies will be awarded to the top three dancers in the junior and senior sections.
