Stellarton firefighters hold annual banquet

On Feb. 3 the Stellarton Fire Department held its annual banquet to honour those who have long service with the department.

Chaplain Rev. Charles McPherson said the prayer before the meal. Master of ceremonies firefighter Simon Lawand introduced the head table guests. Speeches were made by Chief Dwight Campbell and Stellarton Mayor Danny MacGillivray.

Presentation of service awards took place after the meal. Honoured were Simon Lawand, five years service, 10 years to Bobby Dean and Kenny Gordon, 15 years to Lieutenant Nathan Smith and 25-year Provincial Exemplary Service Medal to Deputy Chief Mike O'Sullivan.

Absent were firefighters Al MacGillivray with five years and Paul Sutherland with 10 years. Ladies Auxiliary President Susan Campbell gave a speech and thanked Heather Campbell for her 42 years of dedication after her retirement and awarded her a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Presentation of the cheque from the Ladies Auxiliary to the department was made and a thank you was given by the chief.

Deputy Chief O'Sullivan thanked the Thorburn Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary for catering. Simon Lawand introduced the guest speaker, Rev. Aidan Kingsbury. Gifts were presented to Rev. Kingsbury and his wife. Chief Campbell invited those in attendance to gather in the Oak Room Lounge afterwards for a social evening. Chaplain McPherson closed the event with a closing prayer. Award winners remained for photos. Thank you to all those who attended.

Ed Stewart and Eugene Sullivan were presented with watches earlier in the day on their retirement from the department.

Retired Captain Stewart had 35 years service and firefighter Sullivan had 32 years. Thank you gentlemen for your many years of dedication and service.
