Curley brings pension for councillors issue back up for discussion 
The News
NEW GLASGOW – Town council will again put it to a vote whether officials elected here should be eligible to collect a pension.
Coun. Terry Curley filed the notice of motion during New Glasgow’s committee of council meeting Tuesday evening. He’s proposed that current pensioners would be grandfathered, while pension availability would cease in the future for elected officials.
Council will make a decision on the matter when it meets Nov. 16.
Curley had already put the question to council in December, saying it was a primary concern of the electorate while he was campaigning for his seat. At that time it was defeated 4-3.
New Glasgow remains the only town in this county that provides a pension to elected officials.
Given the current economic situation, he said the move would show citizens that council is “doing everything in (its) power to show leadership in financial management.”
For the record, a council in this province does have the option to develop a pension plan for mayor and council. Those who decide to opt into the plan, however, must make financial contributions, which are matched by the municipality.

Len Walser from New Glasgow, NS writes: - This really tics me off when I see that any council member is able or eligible to get a pension for their services; whether grandfathered or not. This to me is stealing tax payers money! These folks are well paid for their envolvement and no doubt some expenses are covered also. This shows some elected officials are in it for the money and not for the best of the community.

tim from ns, ns writes: Len, do you even know what a Councillor does.Compare their time and pay to that of a MLA or MP and the hours they put in, then tell me they are only in it for the money. Do your homework

Alice from Stellarton, Nova Scotia writes: tim,if they don't want to be a councillor for the right reason,not money,but for the goodness of their fellow citizens,then don't run for councilor,leave it open for someone who actually cares in more things than the evil dollar-they all cry and want a raise as soon as they get elected,ask them at the door just what their interests really are,my concerns,or dollars in their pockets?
