N.S. farmers worry high debt, low margins leading to industry meltdown

TRURO, N.S. — Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture president Richard Melvin says primary agriculture is in crisis.
In his annual report he says operating margins are shrinking, debt loans are growing, farmers are getting older and there are now less of them.
He says it’s all setting the stage for a virtual meltdown of the industry.
Melvin says the federation is trying to chart a course for a better future, while recognizing time is not on their side.
The sectors that are hurting the most are pork and beef.
The federation’s annual two-day general meeting concludes today in Truro.
