WESTVILLE - Curtis Salgado, the multi-award winning soul, blues and R&B musician who helped transform John Belushi into “Joliet” Jake Blues, is the Pictou County Blues Society’s latest performer.

The Oregon-raised vocalist, songwriter and harmonica player comes to Westville on March 3.

Society chairperson Katie MacDonald said the show has been months in the making, with the timing working out as Salgado tours the East Coast of the United States. The Westville concert is the only Nova Scotia stop on his tour.

“We’re hoping that having him come once may lead to something in the future,” MacDonald said. They’re excited to have a musician of his caliber, she said.

Over the past four decades, he has co-fronted The Robert Cray Band, led his own bands, recorded nine solo albums and toured the country with Steve Miller and Santana.

He won the 2010 Blues Music Award (BMA) for Soul Blues Artist Of The Year and went on to win the award again in 2012 and 2013. In 2013, he also won the BMA for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year, the highest honour from The Blues Foundation, and took the statue for Soul Blues Album Of The Year for his Alligator Records debut Soul Shot.

His latest album, The Beautiful Lowdown, was released earlier this fall and earned him three more BMA nominations.

Salgado will be at The Whitetail Pub and Grill on March 3 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance, $23 at the door and are available at The White Lotus in New Glasgow and the Whitetail.
