Sometimes a change is needed.

For the Town Heroes, who recently expanded their alt-rock duo into a four-piece group, that has proven to be true.

For the Town Heroes, who recently expanded their alt-rock duo into a four-piece group, that has proven to be true.

Original member Mike Ryan said they weren’t able to capture the sound they were looking for on some of the songs they’ve been working on recently, leading them to bring in new voices and instrumentation.

“In the past, with the two of us, we really only had my guitar, my vocals and drums to rely on,” Ryan said.

He said adding new sounds “takes pressure off of us,” noting that a broken string in a duo with just one guitar takes away half of the instrumentation.

The larger line-up has performed two full-length sets, and two shorter ones at Nova Scotia Music Week, and is bringing the full band to New Glasgow this weekend.

“It just really brings to life the songs that we couldn’t do as a duo. We’re really happy with the way things are going.”

The new members, Tori Cameron on bass and vocals and Aaron Green on guitar and vocals, are musicians with Floodland, a band The Town Heroes have shared concert bills with for years.

Ryan said bringing more musicians on board has been in the works for a while. Rehearsals officially got underway in the fall, teaching the new members both old and new songs over countless rehearsals.

They’ll be at The Commune on Dec. 2, fresh off a performance during the Boston Christmas Tree Lighting to upwards of 20,000 people.

Ryan said it’s an honour to be a part of the ceremony, noting that he has relatives in the area.

“So many people from Cape Breton have moved down there.”

Tickets for the show in New Glasgow are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Pictou County’s Stonehouse is opening.
