PICTOU – County council is recommending that it increase the wage for its summer students.

Currently, summer students hired by the Municipality of the County of Pictou earn $12 an hour, but after staff researched it this winter, they are recommending that council consider increasing it to $14 an hour.

If approved this will be the first increase for summer employment students by the municipality since 2009.

Typically, the municipality hires four students to take care of its mobile recreation program which offers recreation programs in rural areas that don't have such a program in place. The hired students must have completed one year of university, preferable in a recreation based program, and be returning to school in the fall. Applicants don’t have to be residents of the Municipality of the County of Pictou.
