MERIGOMISH – Fire crews from Barney's River, Thorburn and Merigomish were on scene of a structure fire.

The Merigomish house burned to the ground Monday, leaving a family of four temporarily homeless.

A couple, their 11-year-old daughter and six-year-old son were not home at the time so there were no injuries, though a family pet perished.   They're staying with relatives for now and the Canadian Red Cross has provided emergency aid including purchases of clothing and food.   Volunteer fire departments from Merigomish, Barney's River and Thorburn were called around 11:45 a.m. to the home at 206 Shore Road. There was no immediate word on the cause.
