UPDATED: Demolition ordered for Garrett's by the Bridge if repairs not done

Garretts by the Bridge will be demolished this fall if significant repairs aren’t done to make it safer.

New Glasgow council voted Tuesday to give Eddie MacArthur until Sept. 1 to meet the requirements set by the fire inspector and town engineer or else they will make sure the building is taken down.

Throughout the discussion, town councillors stressed their concerns about the building which has been deemed structurally unsafe as well as an eyesore.

But MacArthur sees more potential in the building which closed in 2012.

A friend, Peter Seitl who has been working with him to clear out the old store, which dealt in antiques in its latter years, spoke at length about the value in the contents in the building. He said they’ve held numerous auctions already and are hoping to hold more in the coming months to sell the valuables.

“It’s a long arduous process, but we’re making headway.”

He said the building is no less structurally sound now than it was in 1973 when he first walked in.

“As far as it falling down is concerned. You and I will never live long enough to see that.”

The back portion of the business was a building attached to the original. It is in the worst condition and could be removed.

He said the building and the contents are essentially MacArthur’s source of retirement.

“It’s his pension. It’s his whole retirement sitting on that property. There’s nothing else to bank on,” Seitl said. “He’s worked there for years for literally nothing. It’s a business that just didn’t provide a lucrative return. If you’re going to take away the building, you’re going to take away his pension.”

The building has a Realtor sign on it and Seitl said he is confident the building has a future use for someone with the right vision of what it could be.

“The building is being sold `As is, Where is`,” the listing online says. “Great redevelopement potential for offices, retail, condos or what your imagination will allow. This Property has opportunity written all over it!”
