Sobeys acquires 213 Safeway stores in Western Canada, strengthening its position as a leading grocery retailer in the country.

STELLARTON - Sobeys has signed an agreement with The Scholten Group to supply six of its dealer-owned gas bars and convenience stations in New Brunswick with fuel.

The stations will be converted to the Shell brand beginning this month.

“Sobeys fuel and convenience is open for business and looking for opportunities to expand into other areas throughout Atlantic Canada,” says Valerie Ryan, VP Convenience & Fuel. “Our value proposition for customers - grocery and fuel savings, combined with our partnership with AIR MILES® - is proving to be a real win for our current partners in the region, and we’re happy to welcome the Scholten family to our network.”

Jerry Scholten, Group Administrator with The Scholten Group, agrees saying, “Partnering with Sobeys Inc. offers our customers more when they shop with us; more opportunities to save at the pump through Sobeys Food for Fuel program and opportunities to save on their groceries as well using AIR MILES Cash. Our customers want savings on these priority purchases and we want to help them save. This partnership makes good sense for us and for any fuel dealer.”

With 85 Sobeys stores in the region, expanding the fuel presence of Sobeys Inc. through the Shell brand is an integral part of the Company’s continued growth in Atlantic Canada. Cross-shop rewards are a significant opportunity to strengthen customer loyalty and the Food for Fuel program offers customers tangible value for their money.

During the Food for Fuel promotion, Sobeys shoppers who spend a minimum of $50 receive a coupon for per-litre savings on fuel purchased at participating retailers, including Shell.

“We are impressed with the efforts of Sobeys to rebuild the Shell image throughout Atlantic Canada and introducing new programs that we believe, are second to none in the industry,” adds Scholten. “Sobeys fuel programs and relationship with AIR MILES, combined with the brand strength of Shell give us the best opportunity to continue to grow our business and better serve our customers.”

The Scholten Group is run by 2nd generation cousins, Jerry and Chris Scholten, who are committed to offering their customers the best value and service to their local communities.

“Sobeys is proudly Atlantic Canadian, having started right here at home more than 107 years ago as a family business. So we see this partnership as a point of pride; working with another family business like the Scholtens who share similar values to Sobeys in placing the customer first and supporting our local communities,” adds Ryan.
