NEW GLASGOW – The bell sounding the end of the school day will soon sound for Temperance Street School.

Members of the public, as well as past and present students and staff of Temperance Street School are invited to attend an open house to celebrate the school’s contribution to the local community.

It will be one last chance for a tour before the school closes this summer. Students and staff from Temperance Street will join New Glasgow Academy this fall, at which time the building will be handed over to the Town of New Glasgow.

“We’re anticipating this may happen in mid-July, but right now we’re not sure,” said Debbie Buott-Matheson of Chignecto Central Regional School Board. “We will follow the process described in the Education Act.”

But tonight’s open house is about reflecting on the school that has been a place of learning in New Glasgow for over 100 years.

“It will be an opportunity for those who attended, whether two or 20 years ago, to revisit the school and say thanks,” said Buott-Matheson. “There will be staff on hand along with historical photos and memorabilia.”

The Farewell to Temperance Street School starts at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 8:30. There will be light refreshments along with tea and coffee.

Buott-Matheson noted that closing a school is always bittersweet, especially when it has a rich history like Temperance Street.

“It has been a well-loved school for a long time and the students who attended have loved it. But I think students will be excited to go to New Glasgow Academy next fall.”
