Advocate leading mental illness support program in Pictou County
Sherry Blinkhorn would like to see a time when talking about mental illness becomes just like talking about the weather.
The 20th annual Summer Street Scramble will be held on Friday, June 20 at Abercrombie Country Club.
With 31 teams confirmed to date David Wallace, committee chairperson said they are hopeful for a strong showing of support from their golfers.
Last year they brought in over $226,000.
All funds raised help create opportunities for 200 people with intellectual disability who receive services through Summer Street.
The theme for the 20th Annual Summer Street Scramble is NASCAR.
“We have a few fun surprises in place for our golfers,” said Bob Bennett, executive director. “This is our major fund raising event and we really need this event to do well if we are to continue providing the quality of services we have over the years.”
Summer Street receives 50 per cent of its operating revenue from the Province of Nova Scotia. The remaining 50 per cent is generated through special events like the Summer Street Scramble and through the sale of product and services offered through Summer Street’s social enterprises.
“There is still room for a couple more teams,” said Wallace “It’s going to be a really fun and very successful day.”
Over the last 19 years the Summer Street Scramble has raised over $2 million for the organization.
