CHAD Transit will be running a charter service during the Pictou Lobster Carnival, July 10-12, to get people home safely at the end of the night.

Pictou Lobster Carnival Volunteer Kent Corbett said the carnival committee has been working in conjunction with the Municipal Alcohol Committee, to find a way to get people out to local festivals, let them enjoy the evening and have a safe, guaranteed drive home.

The CHAD bus will be parked in downtown Pictou each night of the carnival and will department promptly at 1:30 a.m.

Pre-booking will be necessary and must be done by 1 p.m. the day before the service is needed.  For example, he said, if people are planning to go out Saturday night, they should have their seat on the bus booked by 1 p.m. Friday.

For a flat fee of $10, patrons will be picked up at the event and driven to the address they provided to the carnival committee. The driver will not vary from the addresses that were pre-booked.  Any remaining proceeds will be donated to the local Pictou County MADD Chapter. Each bus is fully accessible and holds up to 18 people. Booking can be done through the carnival office at 485-5150.

The Municipal Alcohol Committee, a group of municipal leaders who have been leading local conversations on the impacts of alcohol in our communities, is collaborating with these partners to help provide a safer, more enjoyable time at community events. Their overall message is clear: “We want all who attend to have a great time and get home safely.”

“Pictou County is going to be a happening place this summer and it is the committee’s hope that this initiative will help everyone enjoy all the fun even more, knowing they can plan ahead for a safe way home,” said Clyde Fraser, New Glasgow town councilor and committee member.

A similar service will be offered at the New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee, July 31-Aug. 2 and Stellarton Homecoming on July 25.   More details on these events will follow.

Plans for the Pictou Lobster Carnival are in full swing. Events include lobster banding competitions, king lobster contest, queen crowning, boat races, fireworks, beer garden, parade and antique car show.  For full details visit www.pictoulobstercarnival.ca
