“They were slowing down in traffic and one tractor-trailer noticed a car slowing down and tried to avoid it and caused a little bit of a pile-up, so to speak,” said RCMP Staff-Sgt. Steve Ettinger.

The vehicles were approaching a highway construction zone and traffic was at a crawl at the time of the crash.

“The car was slowing down in traffic and the tractor-trailer came upon it and swerved to miss it type-thing,” said Ettinger. “And then he swerved into the left lane and connected with another tractor-trailer and went into the ditch after that. So there was a minor collision among the three vehicles.”

Both tractor-trailers were carrying lumber.

One person was sent to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre and was treated for undetermined injuries. Although Ettinger couldn’t confirm who was sent to hospital, it’s believed to be the driver of the tractor-trailer that ended up in the ditch.

There were reports that Life Flight was used to transport the injured person to hospital in Halifax, however, Ettinger said to his knowledge, that was false.

“My last report was, 'no, the person was still in Truro."'

RCMP, EHS and the Onslow-Belmont Fire Brigade responded to the scene. Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal closed the highway from Exit 13 to Exit 15 and traffic was re-routed through Onslow to Highway 102.
