PICTOU – A Prince Edward Island man will return to Pictou provincial court next week to answer to two charges of theft and possession of stolen property.

Gordon John Doughty, 61, of Stratford, P.E.I., was arrested without incident and faces charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 laid following a recent collision in Pine Tree.

Shortly after 10 p.m. on May 4, RCMP responded to a report of shoplifting at a business in Pictou. When police arrived at the scene, they learned the suspect had fled in a vehicle. Later that evening, the suspect was located when RCMP responded to a complaint of a single-motor vehicle collision in the Pine Tree area. At the scene, police noted that the vehicle involved in the collision, a 2000 Jaguar S-Type, was stolen from British Columbia, and the driver was the subject of 12 warrants from across Canada.

Doughty was also arrested on the 12 outstanding warrants of arrest, which are in relation to more than 30 charges of a similar nature, dating back to 2013 from P.E.I., New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and B.C.

Doughty’s lawyer said today this client has informed him that charges in British Columbia and Prince Edward have been stayed, but defence counsel asked for time to confirm this for the court. Doughty will appear in Pictou provincial court Monday via video-link.
