Following the Town of Stellarton's centennial celebrations in 1989, the town began its Homecoming Festival – usually occurring the last week of July.

The planning, organizing and work during the Festival is done by staff, the recreation department and volunteers.

The Stellarton Homecoming Festival currently runs from Wednesday through to Sunday and is filled with activities for all ages.

Paul Corbin, recreation director for the town, said one of the highlights this year is the concert in the park on Wednesday at 7 p.m. which will feature Big Fish. He said the group is popular and appeals to a wide range of ages, making it a good event for the whole family.

One of the big changes this year is the fact that the Children’s Parade is going to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the same time as the antique car display. The goal is to bring out more people to enjoy both events. At the same time there will be a barbecue and live entertainment on Foord Street.

Pharmacy First will also be hosting a strawberry tea.

At the Mayor and Council’s garden party on Sunday at Allan Park from 1 to 3 p.m. Jim Richard will be performing.

“He’s going to put on a great show there,” Corbin said.

There will be a 50/50 draw which takes place at the garden party. Tickets for the draw will be sold all week however with proceeds going towards covering the cost of hosting the events, most of which are free to the public.

The whole festival will end with a special night on Sunday at the Sobeys Soccer field with live music by Next Exit from 8:30 to 10 p.m. followed by a fireworks show, which Corbin says is unlike any other seen in Pictou County.

He said the display is a musical fireworks display.

“The fireworks will be shot off to some songs,” he said. “It’ll all be done to the beat of the song that’s being played.”

To help prevent congestion, they are encouraging people who are able to walk to the soccer fields for the show.

For up-to-date information about what’s happening with the festival check out the town’s website or Facebook page. If any events are going to postponed or cancelled because of weather, that will be noted on the Facebook page.
