A bone marrow drive is being held Feb. 15, at the NSCC campus in Stellarton in honour of Brayden Ross.

Ross is a Pictou County teenager currently at the IWK in Halifax for treatment for acute myeloid leukemia.

The One Match Drive will go from 2 to 7 p.m. and organizers hope participants will come out to register themselves as potential bone marrow donors.

As part of the registration, a swab is taken inside a person’s mouth to see if they would be a match for someone in need of a transplant.

The ideal donor is between the ages of 17 and 35.

Ross’s girlfriend Melissa Robertson has been staying in Halifax while he goes through treatment and is excited to see the support for this drive already.

“It’s so awesome to see all the support,” she said.

She said Ross is staying pretty positive under the circumstances.

“He’s doing a round of chemo right now. He needs to be in remission to get the bone transplant.”

He also needs to have a bone marrow match and while the drive on Feb. 15 may not specifically find a result for him, it could find donors for other people in need, Robertson said.

St. Francis Xavier University has gotten behind the drive and is sending a bus from the university to the NSCC with people who want to register as potential donors.
