PICTOU – A Pictou businessman is asking the town to consider two options for Veterans Drive.

Moody Mansour, owner of Partners Construction, recently wrote town council saying he would put in speed bumps on Veterans Drive free of charge if it would remove a barricade that makes a section of the road one-way.

He also proposed, as a second option, to pay for the cost of stop signs on Veterans Drive and Hector Avenue to create a three-way stop if the barricade is removed.

“I think we should consider the offer and table it for future discussions,” said Mayor Jim Ryan.

In a vote of 3-2, Pictou council decided in August to turn a portion of the street one-way in hopes of addressing concerns about speed and high traffic volumes.

Local residents attended Monday’s council meeting wanting a say on the topic, but Ryan said that because Veterans Drive was not on the agenda, it couldnt be discussed during the public comments.

Some people did have a few moments to express their concerns regarding safety and the inconvenience of driving a longer distance to reach their homes in visiting the local commercial centre.

Ryan said he is willing to listen to concerns about the street by phone or appointments made with his office. Residents asked how the topic can be placed on the agenda. Ryan said a request can be made through staff, but it is he who gives final approval of the agenda.
