Seniors are among the safest drivers on the roads, says Lorraine Tobin, a geriatric clinician at the Seniors Clinic – Pictou County Site. They are cautious when they are behind the wheel, are less likely to speed and more likely to wear a seatbelt.

But they are also the most at risk for injury in the event of a crash.

That’s why Tobin believes the CarFit program is so important.

CarFit is a program designed to give a quick, comprehensive check on how well an older driver and their vehicle work together.

A clinic will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Friday, June 22, at the Pictou County Wellness Centre through a partnership between CAA and the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

At the event trained volunteers will compete a 12-point checklist with each driver including the correct position of the driver’s seat, driver’s ability to easily reach the pedals and proper adjustment of mirrors.

“What we find is most concerns that are brought forward are able to be mitigated pretty quickly,” Tobin said.

Occupational therapists will also be on hand to provide consultation, if needed, that will teach drivers how to maintain and improve aspects related to their driving health.

Tobin said little things like the position of a steering wheel can make a big difference for a driver.

“When they do have a better fit to their vehicle they’re more comfortable and feel more secure.”

There are many positive results that can happen, including more independence and greater safety, but also less injury in the event of an accident.

She said this session is not meant to assess the driver’s abilities but as a way to help them.

“It’s truly only an educational event to make them feel more comfortable in their vehicles.”
