NEW GLASGOW - Traders hawking festive decorations and other goodies enjoyed a brisk trade at the New Glasgow Farmers market in the last few weeks before Christmas.
Ann Cullingworth at the Little Acorns stall was selling gifts made from sheep wool at her farm, including home decorations of little Santas and Christmas trees as well as bird houses.
“I’m just getting low on stocks now, I’ll just have to quickly make more for the rest of the season,” said Cullingworth in between serving a steady stream of buyers.
Nonetheless, she urged customers to head on down to the farmers market for some last minute Christmas shopping.
For Christian Ponikau at the Nova Scotia Birch Works stall, the best Christmas gifts were those given by Mother Nature, including candlesticks made from tree branches and hand-crafted ornaments.
“Business is just keeping busy for the last couple of weeks,” said Ponikau. “It’s pretty much a full-time job on the side.”
Nearby, Patsy Chapman was cashing in on a similar natural theme at her stall, Nature’s Nook and Kranny, spelled with a ‘K’ as she quickly pointed out.
Especially in demand were any decorations adorned with berries, such as the wreaths on display.
“Berries. I have been selling berries. That is one thing I can’t seem to keep up on demand. I sell them in bunches and I sell out by 10 o’clock every day,” said Chapman.
Both the tent and indoor hall that host the farmers market were crowded with shoppers from New Glasgow and Pictou County, eager to tick off their Christmas wish lists.
