PICTOU, N.S.

County council is looking forward to getting the keys to the former school board office, but finding out it claims ownership is proving to be difficult.

Coun. David Parker said the head office for the former Chignecto-Central Regional School Board on Westville Road appears to be vacant and considering it is “prime real estate” the county should have ownership sooner than later.

“I suggest we write the Chignecto-Central Regional Education Centre and ask it when, not if, this property will be turned over to us,” he said during a recent property services meeting.

In the past, when a building used by the former school board become vacant, they are turned over to municipalities to do with them as they wish. This property was vacated after the CCRSB was disbanded and the newly formed CCREC moved to offices in Trenton this spring.

Warden Robert Parker said he has several people interested in the property, but nothing can be done until it has ownership.

“I have had no response from the director. I have called four or five times and I don’t even get the courtesy of a return call. It is an important building to council and I have had several requests. We need to push them.”

Meanwhile, council is ready to get rid of a Hillside property. Staff announced recently that property it owns in Hillside will be declared surplus at its September council meeting.
