The deCoste had its official opening in November 1982 with a show by Rita MacNeil. Since then, the deCoste has presented over 3,500 concerts featuring thousands of singers, musicians, actors and dancers from around the world.
It has jump-started many musical careers including the Barra MacNeils, George Canyon, Dave Gunning and many more by providing a venue and staff that supported every aspect of the performing arts. The Centre has also mentored and supported many musicians and performers and enabled them to share their skills in a professional setting.
Darlene MacDonald, manager of the deCoste, credits their reputation as being one of the premier presenters of the performing arts to the commitment of the staff and the support of the community of Pictou County.
“We have provided a place for both professional and amateur productions over the years, and have welcomed the opportunity to present new and upcoming artists to the community over our many years of operations,” she said.
“We are excited every time someone experiences the deCoste for the first time, whether it is a performer or an audience member.”
Past performers include the Mamas and Papas, k.d. lang, the Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Natalie MacMaster, Stompin’ Tom, Kitty Wells, Liona Boyd, the Rankin Family, Mr. Dressup, John McDermott, Moe Koffman, Stuart MacLean, Ashley MacIsaac, Wilf Carter, John Allan Cameron, the Barra MacNeils and many more.
The 2017 fall season has over 40 events scheduled, including musical icon Buffy Sainte Marie, Frank Mills and the touring production of Menopause the Musical. There are also scheduled performances by Dave Gunning and JP Cormier, Bette MacDonald, Quartette and Ashley MacIsaac.
