The future of the Riverton Community Hall is looking a little brighter following a recent public meeting.

Community members held emergency meeting Wednesday to discuss the use of the hall and the hope that some new people would take an interest in the building.

This resulted in a good crowd of people turning out to the hall, including people in the community who haven’t been involved in the past, said Doug Ross, a community volunteer with the centre.

“We had a fair number of people and lot of people were involved in the past years, but we had two younger couples take an interest,” he said.

Ross said Riverton Community Centre is in good shape physically with new windows and half the roof reshingled. It used to be a popular location for community card parties, but over time the number of volunteers for the centre decreased and parties stopped.

The expense of keeping heat in the building just one winter season cost the community centre about $1,800 and this doesn’t include the snow clearing for the parking lot or other expenses.

Ross said the centre will host a yard sale on June 3. Tables will sell for $10 each. After this the centre will hold a meeting in September and see if anyone is interested in starting up the card parties again.

He said he was pleased to see District 12 Coun. Chester Dewar in attendance at the meeting and it is good to have the support of the Municipality of Pictou County.

Anyone wanting to book a table for the June 3 yard sale can contact Doug Ross at 902-752-8079.
