Flames fill the upstairs of a vacant home on Kendall Street in Sydney’s north end on Sunday night. The fire happened at around 9:30 p.m. and about 50 people looked on as crews battled the blaze.

The fire at the Kendall Street home started at about 9:30 p.m. Bryan Stewart, who lives next door, said no one has lived in the building for at least the past couple of years.

“I was sitting in the living room and I thought it was truck that pulled in with a beacon on,” said Stewart, one of about 50 onlookers watching the scene unfold on the dead-end street. “My girlfriend looked at me and said “that house is on fire” and we ran outside.”

The Sydney Fire Department and police were on scene, but had things well under control within a couple of hours.
