PICTOU – A Masstown man who spent seven months in jail waiting for trial walked out of a Pictou courthouse Wednesday of his own free will.

James George Peter Falt, 32, was charged in November 2017 with pointing a firearm, assault by threatening to use a weapon, confinement, assault, mischief, possession of a firearm while prohibited and two breaches of court orders in relation to an alleged incident in Sobeys in Pictou.

He had entered not guilty pleas in April and since his bail was denied he was in custody until his June 27 and 28 trial. However, he made a brief court appearance Wednesday during which time the charges were dismissed because the provincial Crown offered no evidence and stated it had no realistic prospect of conviction.

Falt was sentenced to one day in jail for possession of less than 30 grams of cannabis. The court counted his one day in custody Wednesday as time served and order him to pay a $100 victim surcharge fine.
