This year, Pictou County’s population went out and cleaned in far greater numbers, and because of that, Pictou County got a whole lot greener than it got last year.
This year, Pictou County residents picked up a total of 5.64 tons of garbage around homes, roadways and businesses. This constituted a significant jump from last year’s total garbage collected – 3.17 tons.
The Pictou County-wide cleaning event entailed a total of 3,613 people registering – a number that also exceeded last year’s effort.
“It was better than the previous year, for sure,” said Susan MacDonald, regional co-ordinator for Pictou County Solid Waste. “It went great. We had a lot of positive comments about our program.”
This year’s turnout constituted a significant jump from last year’s – 2,700 registered participants cleaning up around Pictou County. MacDonald said she was pleased to see the uptick in people getting out on the weekend to do their part, and credited the power of social media to help spread word of Go Clean Get Green noting that, specifically, Facebook “helped get our message out there. We were able to get together and share the message.”
MacDonald said that a lot of what people picked up this year included fast food waste, such as wrappers, cups and straws – and cigarette butts.
