The News published an article Wednesday stating that as many as a dozen people in the Hopewell and Lorne area had their heat pumps damaged after a power outage.

Beverly Ware, a spokeswoman for NSP, said on Dec. 28 a large amount of ice had built up on the transmission line causing a widespread outage in Pictou County.

Power crews said the buildup was particularly heavy in the Hopewell and Lorne area, which caused the transmission line to sag down into the distribution line, creating a high current of electricity.

“The two together caused a power surge,” she said.

Ware said NSP will be investigating each complaint individually to determine if customers will be reimbursed for the damage, however, she noted that the company is not liable for damaged caused by things out of its control, such as weather.
