PICTOU – During the early morning hours of July 21, members of Pictou RCMP were conducting a checkpoint on Hwy. 376, when they observed a small car approaching the area.

Before it arrived, the driver turned away, in an apparent attempt to avoid police. An RCMP officer got in his vehicle, initiated a traffic stop, and observed signs the that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

The driver was taken to Pictou RCMP detachment for breath tests. His blood alcohol reading was nearly three times the legal limit. His licence was suspended and he is facing charges of Impaired Driving and Driving with a Blood Alcohol Level Over 80 mg. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Pictou provincial court in September.

The RCMP reminds the public that there is always an alternative to driving while impaired. To report an impaired driver, call 911.
