NEW GLASGOW – Oyez, Oyez!
Town criers from around the world gathered in Chester, England for the World Town Crier Tournament recently. With competitors from America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand joining a host of criers from across Europe and the UK the event was a truly international affair.
New Glasgow was represented by town crier James Stewart, who, although he didn‘t win, was well received by a huge appreciative audience.
The event was organized by Chester Renaissance, an organization set up by Northwest Regional Development Agency and Cheshire West and Chester Council to drive momentum and bring added value to the regeneration efforts to complete and accelerate the economic growth of Chester.
Chief Executive of Chester Renaissance Rita Waters says the event was a huge success with no fewer than 38 town criers taking part.
“We were delighted to welcome the town criers to Chester for what was a superb competition,” she said. “The competitors were immaculately dressed in their fabulous costumes and the competition was certainly fierce with some wonderful performances.”
John Stephens representing Alnwick, Northumberland took first prize, Mark Molnar of St. Catherine’s, Ontario took the silver medal and John Neitz of Minneapolis, USA came third in the initial competition.
