PICTOU – Local ballet dancers will whisk the audience at the deCoste Centre into a famed fairytale of rags to riches: Cinderella.

Janet Bradbury, artistic director with Northumberland Youth Ballet and ballet instructor at the Ashlei Ballet School in Stellarton, said the ballet includes dancers from both organizations, though most of the performers are from the Ashlei School.

“The ages of the performers range from 8 to 18 which can be challenging at times, but it is good for the younger students to work with the older more experienced ones,” Bradbury said. “It’s definitely a learning experience.”

She said she chose Cinderella because it’s “a timeless story.”

“We chose it because we felt it was time for these performers to take on larger ballet.”

Bradbury said the performance is based on the traditional story of Cinderella with no spoken words or songs.

“It’s told through the movements and actions of the dancers,” she said. “The dancers have worked really hard for this performance and I think people might be surprised by the talent on stage.”

Bradbury said Cinderella is a great first performance for someone to watch if they’ve never been to a ballet before.

Tickets are available at decostecentre.ca or at the box office for $12. Show starts at 7 p.m.  with performances Friday and Saturday night.
