MEADOWVILLE – Fresh from the fields doesn't get much fresher than the Food Box Program offered by Longfield Farm.

The program offers a weekly delivery of farm fresh produce in your choice of a small, medium or large box.

"The first of the season you pay for an appropriate-sized box. You receive a weekly delivery of fresh veg for about three months starting in July as long as the weather holds on," said Chad Murray who runs the farm along with his brother Tyrel.

"This year I'll take it right to the public's doors. Maybe I'll do one day in Scotsburn, one day in Pictou, one day in New Glasgow."

He already has an established list of customers in those areas. Last year Chad had about 20 customers and this year he would like that to expand to 60 or so.

The brothers split duties, Chad focuses on the Food Box Program while Tyrel is geared more toward the corporate customer side.

The range of produce offered is vast, from tomatoes to onions to garlic to peppers to carrots to potatoes and so on.

"There's a whole variety, almost everything that you can grow around here," Chad said. "I want to grow some more salad greens this year."

For anyone concerned about chemicals in their food, Chad said that's not an issue with Longfield Farm.

"For our growing methods we use no pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. We haven't certified organic. I decided to take that money and concentrate on marketing and advertising. Maybe someday, it's all about time.… We'll stick to the all-natural, biological label."

The Murrays are growing transplants in their small hothouse and are getting seeds in the ground now.

Chad said the best way to purchase a weekly delivery from the Food Box Program is through email since he's pretty busy with the farm this time of year. He can be reached at: [email protected]. If you're not online you can contact Chad at 485-5674.
