Growing up and going to school in Pictou County, Haley Borden, didn’t always like the way she looked. She didn’t look like the models on TV.
“I struggled with my weight all through school and was bullied at times,” she said. “Then when I got to high school I accepted who I was and began to empower myself.”
She hopes that she can help other girls in Pictou County accept who they are and think more positively about themselves as she takes part in a fashion show that seeks to prove you don’t have to be size zero to be beautiful.
Borden was chosen as one of the models who will be taking part in The Weight Is Over Revolution’s second annual plus-sized fashion event being held in Halifax on June 21.
The Weight Is Over Revolution states that its aim is to empower, enhance and educate plus-size women and connect them with fashion designers, retailers and beauty specialists dedicated to the plus-size industry.
Borden said she found out about the group through word of mouth and then a friend connected her with the director.
“Their mission is to have all women believe they’re beautiful by providing a platform to become empowered with who they are and a positive body image,” Borden said.
Borden took part in pageants and shows as a kid, but when she got older came to believe that beauty pageants were only for skinny girls.
As she makes her dreams come true, she hopes it helps change the way others think.
“I hope that it opens their eyes to let them know you don’t have to be a size zero to be accepted or to follow your dreams, you can be just who you are.”
She’s already had the chance to take part in a photo shoot as a lead-up to the event.
“I was so nervous, but it was the experience of a lifetime.”
She said there have already been a large number of tickets sold for the upcoming show and she believes that by stepping out and getting her feet wet in the modelling industry she can broader her horizons.
“I’m not going to stop at this,” she said.
