NEW GLASGOW – The Town of New Glasgow is celebrating Canada's 143rd birthday with a full day of activities on June 30 as part of their pre-Canada Day festivities.

Starting at 1:30 p.m. the events begin with a flag raising at the Riverfront Gazebo and things wrap up at 11 p.m. that night following the fireworks and evening entertainment at Glasgow Square.

Organizers have something planned for everyone. Following the flag raising by officials and dignitaries there are fun activities for kids with Daisy the Cow from Scotsburn Dairy plus face-painting, games, inflatable bouncy castles and more.

From 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., residents are invited to the Mayor’s Tea hosted by Mayor Barrie MacMillan and council at Glasgow Square. Council is also hosting an Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social at the Riverfront Gazebo at 6 p.m. sponsored by the Town of New Glasgow in partnership with Scotsburn Dairy.

MacMillan said the day is a showcase of what it means to be a Canadian.

“Canada Day showcases our national spirit and commitment to Canadian values like multiculturalism and diversity," he said. "New Glasgow is pleased to host a celebration of our country’s birthday and these qualities that make us proud to be Canadian.”

Evening entertainment kicks off at 7 p.m. at Glasgow Square with a diverse range of performers that reflect the country's rich heritage.

Taking the stage that night are Beyond Ash, Alamo, Autumn's Reach, Dave Gunning, the Doug Scurfield Trio and dancers from Miss Carla's Dance Studio.

The day's events concludes with a fireworks display which begins at 10 p.m. on the East River. Jamie Davidson, at Crabby J's Marina and Fresh Fish Market on the riverfront, in consultation with town engineer Earl MacKenzie, has co-ordinated some required work from Navigable Waters to accommodate the fireworks barge.

Anna Bond, summer events co-ordinator for Glasgow Square Theatre and one of the organizers of Pre-Canada Day, promises the day will be fun for all ages.

“It should be a very exciting and fun day. We have lots of new things planned. We’re all working hard, and we can’t wait for the outcome. I think my favourite thing about (our festivities) will be seeing the kids and the joy in their faces. There are lots of events and games just for them. It’s exciting to help organize something that benefits everyone,” she said.

Stellarton also has a pre-Canada Day event on tap with a seniors' tea from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church on Foord Street.
