Lloyd McLean arrives at the Tim Hortons in Pictou, completing his ride from Oxford to Pictou on Sunday. The 115-kilometre ride was organized to help raise funds for the local Pictou County SPCA.

He said he loves biking and after piloting the Craig Gives Back-to-Back Cross Canada Bicycle Tour last summer he and his wife determined that if he planned any bike trips that they should be a day or two. Cue his idea of biking from Oxford to Pictou and raising funds for the Pictou County SPCA.

“My wife told me to keep it small this year, so I just wanted to do a one-day event,” he said. “I love biking and if I have an opportunity to help a wonderful charity like the SPCA I’m more than happy to do it.”

Even before the ride along the old Short Line rail trail began he was able to raise over $2,000 for the SPCA, which is located in Granton. McLean hopes they will help the group pay for their new septic system, which cost approximately $9,000.

The group was advised they needed to replace their system in June. Their older system had been in use for 35 years.

“We’re happy to help them out with that one-time charge and hope that others in the community can help them out this year with that expense,” he said.

Asked what is next, he said there will be plenty more biking done, but he isn’t sure where or what it will entail.

“I’ve got other things I want to do, but it’s great to do something like this because it also gives you a target, something to train and plan for,” said McLean. “It keeps you focused and out there biking, so there will be more rides like this to come for sure.”
