A new season for the 18th Wave Glasgow New Horizons Band program is set to get underway with an instrument demonstration and experimentation session.
The event is being held Monday, Sept. 17, downstairs at Christ Anglican Church Street, 34 Bridge Avenue in Stellarton at 4 p.m.
The program provides the opportunity for anyone 50 or older who has always wanted to play a musical instrument, or those who may have played in their earlier years and want to take it up again.
Instruments that will be taught include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium (baritone), tuba, drums and percussion, violin, cello, piano, guitar and electric or acoustic bass.
Doing most of the teaching is New Glasgow native Robyn Alcorn-Martin. A vibrant and enthusiastic teacher and performer, she is well respected and well liked by the New Horizons membership. Paul Barrett, a retired music teacher and professional musician from Truro, is administrator of the program. A trombinist, pianist, arranger and composer, Barrett has many years of experience teaching music to people of varying ages and will be doing one rehearsal a month in Stellarton.
The Glasgow New Horizons Band program starts groups of beginners, or “raw recruits” twice a year, in September and January. This newest group is the 18th beginner band to be started in the area. The First Wave was in September 2009 and subsequent groups were initiated each January and September the years following.
