CEO Ramsay Duff said this week they had a roof leak that caused water damage to the interior of one of their buildings and temporarily closed one of the tub rooms. They believe the leak was caused by snow and ice buildup, but that shouldn’t have been a problem with a relatively new roof.
Because the building is so new, the work is still under warranty, but weather is preventing permanent fixes from being completed at this point.
“It’s difficult to get all of the repairs done so some of it is temporary,” Duff said.
“Some of the more permanent repairs are going to have to wait for spring.”
While no one was harmed because of the leak, he said it is a major inconvenience and disruptive to the lives of the residents – circumstances he said that are understandably upsetting to some family members.
Routine is particularly important to those with Alzheimer’s for example, he said, and having to adjust bathing schedules for them can be particularly disruptive to their lives.
“It did upset their days,” Duff said.
This isn’t the first time they’ve had problems with the building or the similar facility built in Trenton.
There was a faulty sprinkler that caused a leak in Trenton and when the facilities opened there were some issues with the geothermal heating and cooling system.
“As owner and operator, it’s obviously frustrating because the facilities are quite new,” Duff said.
He said they try to provide the best environment they can for residents and these problems prevent them from doing that.
He’s hopeful, however, that once the repairs are made in the spring there will be no more serious problems.
He said they’ve held a meeting with the family of the residents they care for to discuss the issues.
