The local chamber of commerce is expanding on how it communicates with businesses.
Jake Chisholm has been hired as the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce’s business outreach officer. A former employee with the Town of New Glasgow, Chisholm will work with chamber members and non-members to enhance communications between them and the chamber.
“One of Jake’s roles will be to reach out to our members and the business community, particularly small business,” said Chamber executive director Jack Kyte. “The chamber does various things but it can’t solve all of the problems, but we do want to provide value.”
Kyte said in the past the chamber has typically communicated with members and the business community through emails and surveys, but it is taking this one step further by having Chisholm hold conversations with people.
The chamber says Chisholm will be having one-on-one interactions with local business owners and managers as well as current chamber members to provide it with much-needed information about its business community and the issues they face.
“He has a very outgoing personality and is well known in the community,” he said. “He will also provide information about the chamber and benefits of membership.”
The Pictou County Chamber of Commerce recently moved into a new location in Bridgeview Square which has a hub space that offers a shared workspace to people who typically work from home but are in need of a place to meet clients or conduct interviews in a more professional setting.
It also has three offices which are rented out to business people looking for something outside of their homes, but without the overhead costs of entire office space.
Kyte said both the shared workplace and the office rentals allow people to expand their businesses at their own pace.
Eventually, he said, they could grow their businesses even more and move on to opening their own storefronts.
The Pictou County Chamber of Commerce’s annual general meeting will be Thursday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at the Pictou County Wellness Centre with guest speaker Andy Horsnell, who is with the Centre of Local Prosperity.
