The Town of New Glasgow is calling upon the community to nominate its busiest volunteers, as National Volunteer Week approaches, this April. These nominations are not limited to people who reside in New Glasgow – volunteers from across Pictou County can now be nominated.

The Town of New Glasgow wishes to see community members all over Pictou County get recognition for their volunteering with organizations and non-profits based in the town.

New Glasgow is lucky to be home to many organizations that benefit all residents of Pictou County and have help from volunteers all over Pictou County, as well, said New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks. In the past, these organization have not been able to recognize their volunteers who live outside the Town of New Glasgow. We listened to those organizations, non-profits and event groups, and we are encouraging them to put names forward, so that these volunteers and their contributions may be recognized for all the work they do.
A media release from the Town of New Glasgow, said the town is asking local organizations to nominate their volunteers to be recognized at the local ceremony celebrating National Volunteer Week.

Each year, communities choose one outstanding resident to be honoured as the volunteer of the year, with the Representative Volunteer Award. New Glasgow is also looking for nominations for speciality volunteer awards, including the Volunteer Youth Award and the Volunteer Family Award.

Nominations are accepted and encouraged from individuals, non-profit organizations, community groups, businesses Mikmaq communities or municipalities.

National Volunteer Week is held in April, and is a celebration of people nominated by organizations and communities across Nova Scotia. On the national level, volunteers from all walks of life, across Canada, at all levels are celebrated.
The local volunteers nominated and selected as recipients – and the energy and commitment they show, every day – will be feted at the Provincial Volunteer Awards.
Information from the Town of New Glasgow described volunteering as “the lifeblood” of communities in Pictou County, providing “a sense of connectedness and well-being [that] helps us build better, stronger and healthier communities.”
