Harvey Kelloway said he opened his door Sunday at 7 a.m. to see five members of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service there, including Deputy Chief Lloyd MacCormack.
Being a retired police officer, Kelloway said he knew what to expect.
“The first thing I said was, ‘What happened to Craig? Was he in a car accident?’
“They said, ‘It’s worse.’”
Kelloway said the police told him his son had been murdered.
“I hollered for my wife Monica, she was hysterical. All the boys were here trying to get us calmed down a bit.”
Craig Kelloway, 31, died after an altercation at a house two doors from his new residence in Calgary late Saturday, according to police.
On Monday, Calgary police announced they have charged Nicholas Rasberry, 25, with second-degree murder.
Adrian Swain, of friend of the murder victim, said Kelloway helped him out with his plumbing business during the summers when not teaching at Calgary’s David Thompson Middle School.
“He was the nicest guy . . . he would do anything to help his neighbours,” Swain said.
Kelloway had a five-month-old.
Students in Calgary have flocked onto social media to express their condolences.
“You were the best science teacher anyone has ever had,” wrote one. “Can’t believe you’re gone.”
With his voice cracking with emotion, the murder victim’s father said a steady flow of police have continued visiting their home Sunday and again Monday.
“They have been wonderful,” he said. “I’ve been gone from the police force since 1998 – they never forgot me.”
